New Grumo Student Explainer Video: ChickenScratch

Rudy Joseph is a talented digital media designer that took our animation course to learn more about the magic behind our Grumo demo videos, and sure he did!

Here is a fantastic demo video Rudy produced after taking the Grumo course:

Rudy shares with us a bit on the process of creating this awesome demo video:

How long did it take to put together?
It took about roughly 4 weeks to put this video together from concept to finish.

How did you record the voice over?
I first used my own voice but I have a fairly deep voice and it didn’t match the theme of the video. I have an M-audio usb mic for singers and it sounded great after I cleaned up the audio in Protools (came with the mic). But I decided to go on fiverr.com as you’ve suggested and I found a pro voice artist who was extremely fast (5 hour turnaround) and professional. The price was certainly right ($5 per gig @ 2 gigs for the voice over).

What was the hardest part?
The hardest part was trying to figure out how to animate the website interface’s features to match the narration without it dragging on and becoming too boring. This took 2 weeks for me to get right.

What was the simplest part?
The simplest part was drawing/animating the characters. They are basically the same character with different colours.

Where did you find the music?
I found a website that had midi music that was royalty free. The song is called Cripple Creek and it’s an Old Time Appalachian folk song written for the fiddle / banjo but I used an acoustic guitar in a music program and it played all of the notes. It’s typically a fast song (250 bpm) so I had to slow it down to not overwhelm the video. It’s the perfect music for the chicken / farm theme of my video.

How did the Grumo course help you?
The Grumo course taught me how to put together a focused, fun and educational video. Before this course, my videos were longwinded and boring. They looked good but they had no personality. I am now a firm believer in the Grumo method. This video so far is my wife’s favourite and she is a tough critic.

How did you find about Grumo?
I am subscribed to many different blogs and Udemy is a sponsor for one of them. I saw the deal for the Grumo course on Udemy and decided to check it out. After visiting the website and watching the videos, I wanted to know the secrets of taking simple imagery and making powerful and entertaining videos. It is a very clever method indeed. The Grumo method is proof that good writing is what makes or breaks a story.

What other places online have helped you learn to put together this awesome demo video?
YouTube because it is a source of inspiration and there is instant feedback on the success or failure of a video. The viewers don’t pull any punches either. Humour seems to be the popular theme in popular videos so I wanted to put that in mine.

Thank you so very much for all of your help!

Great grumo and great business idea. I’m ready to sign up for it. Now you have to build the site and figure out how to make money at it. But please build the damn site, what a great idea!! My only critical comment is the end line “making writer’s block suck less” doesn’t work. How about “…making writer’s block a peck of the past!” or “what the cool chicks use (roosters too!)”
