New Grumo Student Explainer Video: Romantify.com

Here is new demo video that Frederik Lamote created for his awesome new service Romantify after taking our animation course.

Finding and organizing a romantic experience results in a lot of unnecessary organisational hassle. Romantify takes the troubles out of finding and organizing you the perfect romantic experience, so there’s no more excuses!

How long did it take to put together?
It took about 3 weeks to make the video. We had no budget at all, so we did everything ourselves. We could only work on the video some hours in the evening. Making the custom illustrations was the most time consuming.
We did lose some time because we made some scenes we eventually did not use because they didn’t look good visually. That’s maybe a tip for other DIY video makers, if you write your script, keep a bit in mind how you will visualize it. In our case we wanted to make a scene with romance overkill, in our imagination is was super funny. But our amateur graphic skills could not visualize it as we had imagined. To keep our deadline we cut the scene.

How did you record the voice over?
We used the Grumo tip; blanket with iPhone and the VoiceRecord app. If we had some more budget we would definitely use a native english speaker.

What was the hardest part?
We actually were panicking a bit when we had to export our Keynote presentation into a movie format. We tried every possible setting, but every time something wasn’t right, or it was the timing of the slides, or the graphics were blurry or the sound was terrible. We thought we just lost 3 weeks of work. Luckily a friend who does video editing helped us out.
Keeping a certain rhythm or flow in the video is hard too.

What was the simplest part?
Animation in Keynote is simple, with some tricks you can do some pretty cool stuff in Keynote. You can find tons of free tutorials with tricks online.

Where did you find the music?
The background music we bought at Pond5.com, some sound effects come from freesound.org.

How did the Grumo course help you?
Well first of all, the course gives you a structure, a step by step plan how to make your video. It’s explained in a fun way, so you watch it with pleasure.
I would not know where to start to make a video without this course. I learned a lot by Miguel analyzing existing demo videos, then I watched several other demo videos. Then you start to recognize the structures how the videos are build up.
Miguel even breaks down every sentence in your script, and gives you a system to analyze your text.
This made it much more easier (and gave us the confidence) to write our own script. I’m very happy I did this course, and that we already have a basic video, i’m convinced it will help in our communication.

How did you find about Grumo?
Some time ago I had seen an offer on appsumo.com for your course, I didn’t need the offer then. But I remembered Grumo Media, because of the funny demo videos (especially the Hipmunk video with the spanish accent :-))

What other places online have helped you learn to put together this demo video?
For the illustrations I used Adobe Fireworks, I love it because it is a simple to use design program. I learned to work with it by doing some tutorials i just found thru google.
Keynote is in my opinion the simplest way to make animations, but for some movements you need some tricks (f.e. rotating, tilting). on YouTube.com you can find tons of Keynote tutorials.

Thanks a million Frederik for sharing your experience with us, for taking our animation course, and for creating such an awesome service that will provide countless of romantic moments and save many stagnant relationships!

Romantify: put a spark back into your love life, oh yeah!
