Lorna Faith tells us how was her experience creating her course on How to Write and Publish Your First Book after taking Grumo’s How to Create an Awesome Online Course.

What is the course about?
This course is all about helping first-time writers (and those who need a refresher course) learn step-by-step how to write their first fiction or nonfiction book. To follow simple steps to self-publish their book and then
how to market it to their target audience.

How did you choose the topic of the course?
I chose this topic of course because I stopped dreaming of writing for many years, because I thought it would be impossible for me. Finally when I started homeschooling our children, the dream to write and publish my book came back to me. But still it took me many years to go from idea, to writing and then self-publishing my first novel.

Why did you decide to create an online course?
I decided to create an online course, because I have a passion to come alongside of others who either think they can’t write, or feel like their writing isn’t good enough, or they’ve stopped dreaming of holding their very own book in their hands because of any other doubts or fears. I get it – because that’s where I was a few years ago. I’m passionate about helping others to get through the fear and resistance that’s holding them back to write the book they’ve dreamed of writing. To help those who feel like they are alone in this process, and to help them connect with a community of writers who will also help them to get their book published.

How did you find time to produce it?
I found the time to produce it be spending many early mornings and late evenings figuring out the outline and what needed to be in each module and then filling in the gaps of each module.

How long did it take you to put together?
I took me 5 months of working hard at it, to put the course together.

What was the hardest thing to do?
The hardest thing to do in this course, was to figure out the different technology.

What was the simplest thing to do?
The simplest part of creating this course was adding the content, because this was what I had worked on as I created my first two books, so it was something I was comfortable talking about.

How did you determine the price of the course?
I looked around in my industry and realized that for the five modules I was offering along with interviews with bestselling authors as well as the bonuses and access to a community that what I was asking for the course was the average price for a premium course in my niche.

What is your marketing strategy to promote it?
My marketing strategy to promote the course, is to open up the course to my email list and to others twice a year. I only open up the course to new students a couple of times a year, that way I have enough time to dedicate to people who ask for help. I use my email list, podcast, blogging and social media to get the word out when I launch the course.

What software did you use?
The software I used was:

  • WishList Member for new members
  • CourseCats to get my course set up with their WordPress theme and to create separate modules
  • Optimize Press to create pages (including Launch pages for each of the 4 videos)
  • Keynote to create the slides
  • Screenflow to record the videos
  • Aweber to distribute emails when people sign up for information
  • Libsyn to host the podcasts
  • Wordfence for security
  • Stripe and PayPal for my payment system.
  • Hootesuite to schedule social media and that helps to automate my tweets, Facebook posts, etc.

What hardware did you use? (camera, microphone, lights, etc.)
Hardware that I used was the Blue Microphone Yeti USB that I ordered from Amazon (I recorded the interviews with this microphone too);
my iMac computer and a Logitech HD 1080p WebCam.

What was the part the Grumo course help you the most with?
Grumo’s course helped me the most to understand how important it was to get the audio right when I was doing the videos. As well as I learned how to create great slides using Keynote from Grumo Media’s online course. It was totally worth it!

Other resources I’ve used to make this course, was listening to Webinars and podcasts
from other bestselling authors who were also creating online courses. It was great to learn from others in my niche who were doing what I wanted to do.

This has been a huge learning curve for me – someone who really knew nothing about creating a course online. Coming from being a homeschooling mom and piano teacher, to choosing to push past fear to write books and learn about self-publishing has been a difficult at times, but also so rewarding. So if I can do this, then anyone can!

If you’ve been wanting to get your course out into the world, don’t wait. Think of what you’re passionate about and start putting together a course on what you’ve learned. It’s that simple:)
